Zundel Seeks Money

TORONTO -- Toronto publisher Ernst Zundel says he wants an official apology
and compensation from the Ontario government for "ruining" his reputation by
trying him under anti-racism laws.

Zundel, who was prosecuted for publications that said the Holocaust was a
hoax, made the compensation request in a letter to the Ontario ombudsman.

"I believe I have been grievously wronged by various members, officials and
levels of the Ontario government," Zundel said in the letter, which was
released yesterday.

But Zundel's Holocaust denials are "reprehensible" and his prosecution was
justified, said a spokesman for the Canadian Jewish Congress.

Zundel was convicted twice for spreading "false news" in a pamphlet in 1983
which questioned whether six million Jews were killed by the Nazis.  He
successfully appealed both times.

Last August, the Supreme Court of Canada overturned the latest guilty
verdict on the grounds that the false news law violates the constitutional
right to freedom of speech.
